Kakure Judo Club's Defense against a Ligature or Strangle Cord

In the movies, you often see a bad guy attacking someone from behind with a rope strangle cord, and the victim becoming unconscious in a matter of seconds. Not only is the timeframe unrealistically fast, but the effectiveness of a ligature attack is way over-rated!

Unless you are being cut by the ligature, as in the use of piano wire, it is actually very easy to escape from a strangle cord, chain, or even bar around your neck when attacked from behind.

Here's a breakdown of the defense shown in the video above:

1. As soon as you feel the attack coming around your neck, steady your balance by bending at the knees a bit and lowering your center of gravity. This will prevent you from being bent over backwards.

2. Pick a side, right or left to turn to - Let's assume turning to your right for the purposes of this explanation.

2. a) This is optional but effective: if you're turning to your right, move your hips slightly to your left to make some room and use your right hand to deliver a back-fist to the attacker's groin. This will at the very least cause a flinch from them that will create some space between you to make step 2.b easier to accomplish.

2. b) Drop your weight a little bit, roll your right shoulder under the attacker's hands, pass your right arm under your attacker's arms, hooking under their left armpit, and then lift strongly upwards.

3. Use your left hand to take a grip of the attacker's right arm at the triceps/elbow.

4. Execute a throw using the pull of your left arm and the lifting motion of your right arm. Effective throws from this position are O Goshi, Tai Otoshi, Harai Goshi, Tsurikomi Goshi, Uchi Mata. This will put you in a top-dominant position and the strangle cord will no longer be a threat to you.

5. Once on the ground, finish with strikes as suits you.

It doesn't matter if the attacker is using rope, steel chain, an iron bar, etc., so long as you aren't being cut by the ligature - This defense is highly effective and easy to execute.

Don't be a movie-style victim - practice this ligature defense and throw the bad guys on their heads!

:)
